Nokia has been known as the largest phone maker in the world for 14 years, but now Samsung is very close to ending this long-lasting reign of the Finnish manufacturer and becoming the number one phone maker in the world.

Nokia-vs-Samsung

According to Samsung Chief Executive Choi Gee-sung, Samsung’s revenues in the third quarter of 2011 have already been bigger than those of Nokia, and in 2012 Samsung will most likely completely overtake Nokia. The South Korean manufacturer is really becoming more and more popular despite the efforts of other phone makers like HTC, Motorola, RIM and LG to attract customers with new powerful devices, so it won’t be surprising if Samsung is soon called the biggest and the most popular phone manufacturer in the world.

“Samsung is really charging forward at the moment. It is delivering really compelling products to the market and consumers are responding,” said Tim Shepherd, analyst at technology research firm Canalys.

In 2011, Nokia was expected to sell 418 million phones, while Samsung should sell only 320 million. In 2012, Nokia’s expected to sell only 388 million, and Samsung’s sales are expected to rise to 359 million. Some analysts claim that the sales of Samsung will be even bigger if the Galaxy S3 is released in the first of second quarter of 2012 – it will surely attract much attention.

Yeah, it’s true that Samsung’s main flagships are smartphones now, but there are still many countries where people aren’t ready to spend much money on smartphones and prefer buying cheap feature phones. In these countries Nokia, which is famous for its good-quality feature phones, is still the king, but there is a big chance that in those countries, too, people will now start paying more attention to Samsung’s feature phones.

“Samsung is getting closer to Nokia very quickly. Their smartphones strategy has proven right and on feature phones they are growing fast in emerging markets too,” said IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo.

Most analysts (Royal Bank of Scotland being among them) claim that in 2012 Samsung will no doubts overtake Nokia, but there are analysts who think that Nokia will be able to keep its position of the first phone maker in the world for a few more years, even despite the recent share losses. We don’t know yet which opinion is more correct, but time will show. And for now we can only say that Samsung is already the biggest technology company in the world by revenue: According to their last reports, there was a 6.5 percent rise in the revenues of 2011 – they made 164.7 trillion won (about $141.54 billion). If Samsung continues like this, it will really outsell Nokia in 2012.

IF Samsung keep selling its Smartphone’s at the present rate then definitely it will leave behind Nokia Soon. And it is expected to rise in Samsung’s product sale in 2012.
